Handguns and Firearms

Maryland has strict firearm laws with long mandatory penalties for certain crimes. A mandatory sentence is a day for day with no diminution (good time) credits for crimes of violence. Out of state carry permits are not valid in Maryland and transporting a firearm in a vehicle is subject to strict statutory limitations.

Many Maryland laws disqualify an individual from possessing a firearm. Firearm and handgun charges enhance the punishment for many crimes even when the firearm violation was not the initial reason for a vehicle stop or arrest.

Common firearm violations are persons disqualified, a felon in possession, and a firearm involving a drug trafficking crime.

The Cecil County State's Attorney is exceptionally aggressive in charging and pursuing mandatory sentence firearm crimes.
